How do you transfer tomatoes from the garden to a pot?

I learned a little about the container that do gardening by a short class at my church, but dicussed growth from seeds or plants of the device starting from the warehouse. I have a tomato plant that I want to bring full grown that part of the inner part.

Just dig it out, I’d think, like repotting a plant, and put it in a large pot. Use good top soil or potting soil and water well.
